Living your dreams at the expectations of others
I am currently reading for the third time the Book “The Dream Giver” by Bruce Wilkenson and he said something that blew my mind. In chapter 8 he stated, “So many people come from families—and even whole cultures—that don’t believe in Big Dreams. If this is what you experienced, it can be very painful. You feel like you’re walking around in a room where the ceiling is six inches too low! Maybe your family made it clear (without ever saying it) that you’re not expected to achieve much. Or maybe your family only approved of certain kinds of dreams.” Think of this for a minute.
Do we have the tendency to allow those around us to determine where we go in life? I know I have fallen into that scenario too many times. I understand how it feels when you see yourself at the end of the journey achieving the big dream and those around you only see you. They see all the obstacles, like finance, education, help or time but all you see and feel is the desire to achieve this big Dream. You know that the only way you will ever be happy is if you go after it but when you do it seems harder than ever. You want to give up but the burning dream inside you says you can do it if you don’t give up. Does anyone else feel the same way?
The one thing I can tell you is that sometimes there is help and guidance in the hardest of times if you only listen to the small voice inside of you. And most times there will be someone else who sees what you see and want to help you to get there as I mentioned in my last blog. Don’t allow those who are comfortable sitting on the sideline cheering the team along talk you out of being on the team. Don’t allow those who are comfortable working for others talk you out of starting your own business. How many of you love using technology? Did you know that Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Ted Turner and Mark Zuckerberg all do not have a college degree? This is not to say that they did not take classes in their area of interest. If not for them we would not be on this great platform reading and encouraging each other. For you fashionistas, Ralph Lauren is a name that you all recognize I am sure and he did not have a degree but went after his dream to make us look beautiful.
What I am saying to you all is what you already know. The only person that is truly preventing you from reaching your dream today is you because you are trying to please the very people that you will eventually be able to help. Go after the things you desire and get the help in figuring how to get there we all need someone to guide us and keep us accountable at times when it gets rough.
Tell us what you think.
